Arbor Academy
We are proud to announce that our featured success story for January 2003 is Arbor Academy in Battle Creek, Michigan! Arbor Academy is a charter school with 134 students in grades K through 5. Being a charter school, the school receives limited outside funding, and therefore relies on fundraising to pay for start up costs, field trips, textbooks, etc. Each year, Arbor Academy's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) has four fundraisers to raise the money they need.
In search of a fundraiser to raise money for start up costs in the beginning of the 2002/2003 school year, Kathryn Mays, a member of the Arbor Academy PTO, decided to sell items out of FundRaising.Com's 40 page Gingerbread Goodies gift catalog. Kathryn was hoping to raise $1,000 with this first fundraiser of the year.
From October 31 until November 7, 43 families sold to their families, neighbors and friends. After only 7 days of hard work and dedication, the students had sold $4,500 worth of merchandise, raising $2,250 in pure profit for the school! With this money, the PTO was able to pay for nine 5th graders to attend a 3-day camp and sponsor two "Christmas Families" by providing them with holiday meals, gifts, winter clothing and groceries. Also, with the extra money earned, the PTO purchased new dictionaries for all the classrooms and put on a "Santa's Workshop" so the students could buy small Christmas presents for their families.
Kathryn says she has "had more success with this fundraiser than in all the fundraisers I've done in the last 10 years." She attributes their successful fundraiser and large amount of money earned to the hard work of the students who sold so many items in such a short amount of time.
Kathryn says, "From the 'get-go' I was really impressed. We will be working with FundRaising.Com again!" She is currently planning two more fundraisers with FundRaising.Com for this year. She hopes to raise at least another $2,200 with a candy bar sale in January and a Pennies to Dollars™ scratch card fundraiser in March.
