Blue Ridge Glory
Nestled at the crossroads of the Blue Ridge Mountains lies Wytheville, VA. Wytheville is a small town of only 7,800 rich with historic heritage. And also in this town resides the George Wythe High School Choir, FundRaising.Com's featured organization of the month. 50 members strong and under the lead of Judy Hall, this choir has produced over $10,500 in sales in less than a year.
Judy Hall, the choir director, is not just a teacher in this choir - she is a believer. Judy believes in the beauty of all types of music. Her love of music has spread to her daughters - one of which is currently pursuing a major in trumpet performance and the other of which intends to pursue a major in music education with the goal of teaching college level music. However, Judy's daughters are not the only ones that have benefited from her teaching. In the festivals and competitions in which the choir performs, they perform all types of music, causing the students to appreciate music as well.
As with most school groups these days, the choir needed to raise money. Determined to make the most possible, the choir chose 3 different types of fundraisers. They began with a cookie dough sale. Success in that led them into a fall catalog sale and then a repeat of the cookie dough sale. These fabulous sales have funded the choir's trips to Acapulco among other places. Judy believes that because they have a vested interest in the proceeds of the fundraiser, they are more motivated to sell, sell, sell. She encourages the students to pick the fundraisers that they would buy themselves so that when it comes time to sell, they are able to express their enthusiasm to generate more sales. She claims that she could sell ice cream to an Eskimo and she passes these hints on to her students.
