Ecological Education
Three hundred and twenty nine tubs of cookie dough, sixty cases of lollipops, one hundred and ten cases of chocolate candy, and fifteen pennies to dollars cards… a grand total of over $13,000 in sales and even more in profit. Is it possible for one group to have been this successful with fundraising in less than two years? It sure is - just ask the Fairland High School Ecology Club, FundRaising.Com's featured organization of July! Operating out of a 525-person high school in a small town in southern Ohio called Proctorville, the Fairland High School Ecology Club diligently strives to aid the environment under the direction of Lynn Scragg. 104 members strong, these indomitable students are dedicated to bettering their environment and community.
It all started with a card. Over three years ago, Lynn, searching for a way to raise funds for her school, came upon FundRaising.Com's free lollipop sample postcard. Intrigued by the product, she decided to try it out and was thrilled with the results. Relieved that there was no shipping and handling and delighted with the attentive and polite customer service, she continued ordering lollipops for a couple of years until her fundraising needs extended into the more lucrative product of cookie dough. It was no surprise that with the motivation her sellers had already demonstrated, the cookie dough fundraiser was successful as well. But two types of successful fundraisers were not enough for this group. They kept growing right into both chocolate sales and the Pennies to Dollars Cards.
These ambitious students were so successful because they had goals - big goals. Since they have been working with FundRaising.Com, they have sponsored a trip to Costa Rica to visit rainforest land that they purchased with these same funds, and adopted bald eagles in a sanctuary as well as dolphins and humpback whales living in the wild. This year alone, they have journeyed to the Cincinnati Zoo, the Newport Aquarium, and the IMAX Theater, all with basis in furthering their ecological knowledge. As a community service to their area as well, they passed out White Pine Trees on Arbor Day.
But Ecology is not the only focus of these motivated students; education in general is their central purpose. At the end of the month of June, these extensive funds helped finance an eighteen-day trip to Greece and Italy for six very interested students. Students such as these are truly what fundraising is about. They wanted something, so they worked hard to get it. They established their goals and they achieved them. They are proof that if you have motivation, you will have results.
