Habitat for Humanity Club
Our Featured Organization of the Month!
Most people are familiar with Habitat for Humanity, the successful nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization that provides houses in partnership with those in need of adequate shelter. A rather surprising and interesting fact about this program is that a few of the over 100,000 homes built through the program were built entirely by students with money the students raised. Students sign a covenant to raise funds, raise the walls, and raise consciousness about the need for affordable housing. The 50 students that comprise the Habitat for Humanity Club at Brookhaven Technical Center in Bellport, New York are a great example of this student effort. Brookhaven is one of many schools in the Eastern Suffolk county area of New York that together raise about $120,000 each year for the construction of two single-family homes. In addition, the Habitat homes are built just a few blocks from the school, so the positive impact on the neighborhood is very evident.
Brookhaven offers 19 different course offerings, from advertising art to TV production, for students in grades ten through twelve. All students at Brookhaven are welcome to join the Habitat for Humanity Club, with students from almost all program areas represented. Students have enjoyed the opportunity to help with the construction, according to Eileen Brenner who coordinates the club fundraising and construction days. Having the ability to help change things and work right alongside the families is an experience the students’ just love.
Eileen has been the Instructional Assistance teacher at Brookhaven for the past 17 years and especially believes in the community service aspect the club brings to the school. The Habitat Club relies on fundraising sales of lollipops and candy to raise the money each year. Eileen likes working with FundRaising.Com because it’s so easy and we’re “just a phone call away.” We’ll be sending the Habitat for Humanity Club at Brookhaven a master case of Hershey’s All American Variety Pack of candy bars for being our April featured organization. We support their generous efforts in helping to provide affordable homes for those in need and are proud of their accomplishments!
