St. Mark’s Missionary Baptist Church
Our featured organization for June is St. Mark’s Missionary Baptist Church in Natchez, Mississippi. Natchez, the westernmost city in Mississippi has a population of approximately 34,000 and is included in Hugh Bayless’ book, “The 100 Best Towns in America.” Sunday school classes and summer Bible camp make it the “Best Church in Town” for the children at St. Mark’s!
St. Mark’s Bible camp is open to anyone in the community. Each summer, the camp welcomes over 150 children, ages 2 through 20 to a very special and spiritual program. Classes meet from 8am to 12:30 pm every weekday for two weeks. “Blast Off with Jesus” was last summer’s theme as volunteers taught classes, prepared breakfast, supervised outdoor activities and worked hard to create wonderful memories for the children.
“All are welcome,” according to Claver Smith, who manages fundraising activities and volunteers at the church. She used the “All are Welcome” theme as the personalized message on the Pennies to Dollars donation cards used to raise over $4,000 for the youth programs. Claver, who has been coordinated fundraising activities for the past four years “enjoys helping with fundraising.” Her volunteer efforts are not limited to fundraising alone. Claver helps wherever she’s needed – whether it be transporting kids, teaching classes or preparing food in the kitchen. Her daughter, ClaDonda and son, JorDon are active as lead singers as well as soloists for the church choir. ClaDonda’s beautiful voice will face a different audience in August, when she competes for the Miss Mississippi crown in Jackson.
We will be sending Claver and St. Mark’s Missionary Baptist Church a master case of the Gourmet All-Star pops for being our June Organization of the Month. We congratulate St. Mark’s and the many volunteers who work so hard to offer the summer camp and the other youth programs. We also wish ClaDonda the best of luck as she vies for the title of Miss Mississippi.
